Cloth diapering can be confusing with all the choices available. There are several types of diapers.

Flats and Nappies are large rectangles that are folded a lot and pinned onto baby. They are commonly gauze for flats and terry for Nappies. They are quickest to dry but most difficult to use and frequently not absorbent enough.

Prefolds are smaller rectangles with thicker center layers that can be laid into a wrap-type cover, which is fastened onto baby with Velcro or pinned onto baby with diaper pins, diaper clips or fastened with a Snappi (a T-shaped stretchy rubber band with teeth which grab the diaper at the sides and crotch to hold the diaper on baby! Prefolds are very durable, quicker to dry then AIOs or fitted diapers, economical and come in a variety of sizes most common of which are Infant, Premium and Toddler.

Hemp Fleece Prefolds are great if you have a heavy wetting babe or are looking for a super absorbent overnight diaper.

Contours are flat diapers with a contour shape to fit into a wrap-type cover. Although they are trim, most are not nearly absorbent enough to do the job and usually result in soggy wet babies in wet clothes and cloth diapering disappointment. However Kissaluvs and Doodle Bottoms have done a great job in creating truly absorbent contour diapers. Or try Rumpster's revolutionary new design.

Fitted diapers are hourglass-shaped diapers with elastic at the legs and usually the waist as well. They are easy to apply and stay in place. Messes are contained well in the diaper so fewer covers are needed and clothes have 2 layers of protection from blowouts. Fitted diapers require diaper covers to keep wetness from getting on baby's clothes and bedding. Kissaluvs are a very popular nicely absorbent cotton in a soft fleece texture or a fleece/terry. They are nice and trim with a low cut in the front and fit a wide range of baby sizes due to their stretchiness. For extra softness and great absorbency try organic cotton found in FunOrganic diaper with front snaps or Liz's Cloth Organic diapers in side snaps or Sugar Peas Organic diapers in front or side snaps or with cute prints. For super absorbency try hemp diapers like Liz's Cloth front and side snap diapers or Sugar Peas Two Sized front snap or side snap diapers. For super hemp in an economical choice try the one-sized Baby Greens, or Doodle Bottoms diapers.

All-In-Ones or AIOs are a diaper and diaper cover in one. They are easiest to apply but can be harder to thoroughly clean, take longer to dry, and may be less durable, unless the are made of layers that are separated for washing and reassembled to put on baby. Starbunz AIOs are a one piece AIO with soft fleece on the outside and the inside. The also come in a new design with included doubler and no waterproof layer for breathable comfort and thorough cleaning. Rumpster AIOs have a quick-dry flap system for thorough cleaning and quick-drying and come in fabulous prints. Liz's Cloth AIOs have a breathable fleece outer and use separate snap-in soakers to make cleaning more thorough and drying quicker. Lucy's Hope Chest and Luke's Drawers have a fun cotton print covered PUL outer with a snap in absorbent soaker that can be replaced so the diaper can be used for more then one change when lightly wet.
